PATTERN PROJECT

The purpose of this project was to learn how to successfully create a pattern using the Fibonacci sequence to make an aesthetically pleasing and mathematically correct design. I did this by using the golden spiral to create my koi fish and lay out my overall design. I used perfect circles to create my spirals and water symbols. I used the numbers in the Fibonacci sequence to determine the number of elements used in my design.

This design is targeted towards women from ages 18-28 who are passionate about fitness and yoga. Typically people who like fitness and yoga are considerate of their health and wellness, and try to maintain peace and balance in their lifestyle. The reason I chose koi fish as my main subject in this pattern is that they generally represent perseverance, strength of character, courage, ambition, and are positive symbols. I wanted to integrate the yin and yang symbol in some way because it represents balance and harmony. The reason I chose to use water spirals in my pattern was to make the fish look like they’re swimming, but also because water symbolizes power, wisdom, and grace. The colors I chose for my pattern are a blue/green because it is supposed to be a calming color. Overall, I wanted to represent peace, balance, and prosperity because that’s how I want my target market to feel when they wear or see this pattern.

The art movement that inspired my design is art nouveau because of the organic forms and ornamental style that is associated wuth this movement. Nature is a common them within the art nouveau movement which is also why I chose to represent it in my pattern. I thought that organic lines would work for the water portion of my pattern because water is flowy and peaceful. I gave my design a bit of a modern twist with the use perfect circles to bring more of the mathematical perspective into my design.
