Strawberry Pattern Journal

Pattern Design

Design Studio, Winter Semester 2020

This repeating pattern design uses the Fibonacci sequence and golden ratio to create a pattern that's visually pleasing. This pattern, using strawberries and mushrooms was inspired by aesthetics seen in old furniture and nature.

The purpose of this assignment was to learn about and use the Fibonacci sequence/golden ratio in designing our pattern. My target audience for my pattern is ages 16-25, mainly women, who enjoy aesthetics such as ‘cottagecore’ or ‘fairycore’. I used natural colours like brown and green, and a bright colour pink, to appeal more to this audience . I also made the choice of drawing strawberries and mushrooms because it combines a more dull or earthy element (mushrooms), and an element that’s so and cute, (strawberries).

I think this project was successful because I used the fibonacci sequence to create a design that’s appealing to the viewer’s eye. I decided on this final design because I thought that the diamond shape created by the strawberries, that holds the mushrooms and squiggles, looked interesting and was the most successful of all the versions I tried. Overall, I really enjoyed this project because the style and theme I chose is something that I really like, and it was interesting to try to use the fibonacci spiral and golden ratio in this assignment.
